music should be beautiful, interesting and compelling.
Movies: I can manage to enjoy most movies. I didn't like Thelma and Louise because it was clearly going to end tragically, but didn't have to if the characters weren't so dysfunctional. I suppose another possible interpertation is that in the end they achieved freedom, if however fleeting. Moral of the story: don't surround yourself with idiots; nothing good will come of it.
TV: Heroes : the character development is interesting, likewise how the threads of the plot are interwoven. I gave up on Lost because it looked like the writing had no particular direction except to string the viewer along. (or is that the point?) Anyways I hope Heroes remains on track. News, CSPAN, Book TV, American Perspective and sometimes House (I think this season is deteriorating though). At various times I've watched CSI, The Closer, Psych, The 4400, Dead Zone. Years ago I liked to watch Grace Under Fire, for reasons I can not explain. I never liked Seinfeld, but liked Frazier.

Dislikes: Slackers, Idiots, Bad People, Television ("Reality TV" in particular, cause it's >99% TV and <1% reality... though I'd like to compete in The Amazing Race ), Liars, Hillary Clinton, "dubya" and crew (to be fair and balanced though maybe they were already covered under "Idiots and Bad People"), Misc, Other...

Vices: I drink maybe once every couple of weeks. Nothing against it, but it interferes with training and other activites where I like a clear head. I used to smoke, but quit that 10 years ago when my daughter was born.
Virtues: I'm straightforward and honest. I try to treat people like I would like to be treated and look for constructive "win-win" solutions to problems. I work at staying healthy and fit.

Cyclists are often faster than you'd expect!

Thursday, November 8, 2007, 10:03 AM EST [General]

Drivers pulling out in front of them is one of the biggest hazards faced by cyclists.  That's what happened in the accident shown below.  Also, many cyclists are injured when a driver passes a cyclist only to make a right turn just ahead of the cyclist.

Well trained cyclists move down the road at speeds between 20 to 30 mph depending on conditions. (headwind or tailwind, slope of the road, turns, traffic, road surface, etc  When drivers don't understand that cyclists may be moving at speeds comparable to those of motor vehicles, they are more likely to make errors in judgement that result in collisions with a cyclist.

The most common errors are pulling out in the cyclist's path because they think they have time to clear the intersection before the bike gets there and underestimating the speed of a cyclist they are passing, then making a right turn directly in the cyclist's path.

Here are some cell phone pictures of a bicycle/automobile accident last night on Palm Beach.  The cyclist was moving at the speed limit (25mph) when he began braking for the collision.
